Layers of Design #1
3,519 ready-to-use company logos, design guidelines for art travel, and the history of Visual Basic
💡 Quick Update
I have published a new post: “Mini” products that inspire me.
As I’m planning to build mini projects, this is a growing list of products that motivates me to build more.
💎 Design gems
Air Travel Design Guide
Air Travel Design Guide is a guidebook for airport stakeholders, designers, and air travel enthusiasts. It describes the design of artifacts, spaces, and systems that impact a passenger’s experience.
One of the coolest resources I’ve found thus far. My favorite part is the “What if” section in each breakdown.
Something Pretty Right: A History of Visual Basic
Something Pretty Right is an article tribute to Visual Basic - a legendary programming dev environment developed by Microsoft in 1991. Written by Ryan Lucas (Head of Design at Retool), the article walks over how Visual Basic became the world’s most dominant programming environment, its fall from grace, and how it’s still shaping the future of software development.
Not only this site is extremely beautiful, but also learning about Visual Basic blew me away.
It was one of the first products that allowed developers to create graphical user interface (GUI) applications using a drag-and-drop interface.
It was like the Godfather of Webflow, Framer, and all the no code tools out there. I would recommend watching this 1991 video of Bill Gates demo-ing Visual Basic: It’s fascinating.
Fey’s Public Logo Database
Fey is a financial tool that makes stock research simple. They released their public logo database, which consists of 3,519 company logos. You can copy/download the SVG or JSX version of each logo.
I discovered this after the founder of Fey (Dennis) posted it on Twitter. This will be my go-to place for any company logo in the future.
😌 Question of the day
What’s one app/product that you love but not many people know about?
This question ties back to my most recent post about “mini” products. One that I found recently is Hevy - a free workout planner. I’ve used it several times, and I’m super impressed with the subtle UX decisions that help me keep track of my workouts.
See you next time,
Guo
good stuff!
